WinterBurst Granny Square Cowl Pattern

Intro
Warm, snuggly, a bright pop of colour…what more could you want? This easy and quick-to-work-up starburst granny square cowl (or neck warmer) is your next project.
I used a wonderful hand-dyed, bulky weight yarn from Hue Loco Yarn in a 100% SW Merino. If you’ve got some lying around or want to treat yourself-this project is perfect for you.

US 6.00 mm crochet hook
Needle for weaving in ends

*** any bulky weight yarn can be substituted as long as gauge is met-here are a few of my favourite alternatives:

** Please note: you can also use DK weight yarn held double to meet gauge! So, if you’ve got a few skeins of DK you’ve been wanting to use up—this may just be the perfect pattern.

Glossary (using US Crochet Terminology)

How to 2 DC cl: YO and insert hook into center of circle, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through 2. Repeat one more time. YO and pull through 3 loops on hook, Ch 1.
How to 4 DC cl: YO and insert hook into sp, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through 2. Repeat this 3 more times. There should be 5 loops on the hook. YO and pull through all 5 loops.
Pattern Notes
In some cases, the video tutorials have been used for other patterns. Please follow the yarn recommendations, hook size and stitch counts in the written pattern- the videos are only meant as visual guides.
Gauge will affect yarn quantities, please adjust hook size to meet gauge.
Ch 2 counts as DC throughout pattern.
Ch 3 counts as tr throughout.
Cowl/Neck Warmer is constructed using JAYG: where each sunburst is turned into a square while attaching to the previous square. IF you wish to join using a different method-please note you will require more yarn.

Schematic
Dimensions: 6 squares x 2 squares = 12 squares
Pattern Finn Starburst Granny Square
Round 1
Ch 5, sl st into 5th ch from hook to create centre ring.
Ch 2, work 1 DC into centre ring, ch 1 (this counts as first cl st).
Work 11 [2 DC cl] into centre ring (12 cl sts).
Join rnd with sl st to the ch-1 sp between the first and second cl sts at beginning of rnd.
Fasten off.
Round 2
Join next colour into any ch-1 sp and ch 2.
Work a [4 DC cl] into same sp, ch 2.
Work a [4 DC cl, ch 2] into each ch-1 sp around (12 cl sts).
Join rnd with sl st into the first ch-2 space of the rnd (not into the top of the cl st).
Fasten off.
**Only Complete the following Round 3 for the first square of cowl/neck warmer…. the rest of the squares are completed while using the JAYG method in the following section “Assembling Cowl/Neck Warmer Squares”.
Round 3
Join next colour into any ch-2 sp and ch 3.
Work [2 tr, ch 2, 3 tr] into same sp.
*Work 3 DC into next ch-2 sp, twice.
Work [3 tr, ch 2, 3 tr] in next ch-2 sp.*
Repeat from * to * 2 more times.
Work 3 DC into next ch-2 sp, twice.
Join rnd with sl st into the top of the first tr (not the ch-3).
Fasten off.

Assembling Cowl/Neck Warmer Squares with JAYG:
Complete all 3 rounds of the first square of cowl/neck warmer. From there, each square will be completed while joining using the JAYG video tutorial below.
Square 6 and 12 will be used to join the cowl/neck warmer into a seamless tube. To do this, follow the instructions below…
- Place joined squares WS up, and fold in both sides…to join squares 1 and 5 together with 6:
- Start with half a corner (ch 3, 2 tr, ch 1) and sl st into bottom right corner of square 1 (see Figure 1), continue to join square 6 as per JAYG video tutorial. Once across the top, work half of the corner and then sl st into corner of square 5 (see Figure 2), finish joining and fasten off (see Figure 3).
To join squares 7 and 11 together with 12:
Start with half a corner (ch 3, 2 tr, ch 1) and sl st into bottom right corner of square 7 (see Figure 4), continue to join square 12 as per JAYG video tutorial (see Figure 5 & 6), fasten off, weave in ends.

Border
Round 1
Join yarn into the top of any st and ch 1.
Work a SC into every st around. Where two squares meet, work a SC into each corner sp.
Join with a sl st to the first SC (not the ch-1.)
Do not fasten off.
Round 2 (Picot Border)
*Ch 3, SC into same st.
Skip next st and sl st into the next (2nd st from hook).*
Repeat from * to * all the way around.
Finish with a sl st into base of first picot st.
Fasten off, weave in all ends.
*Repeat both Rounds of Border on the bottom edge of cowl/neck warmer.
